: Sendo X Review - Software :

Personal Organizer:
Sendo X PC SynchronizationSmartphones don't get their name just because it sounds cool. There intended purpose is to offer more than regular cell phones and have to offer certain features to be called such. As this is Sendo's second attempt after a failed first with Microsoft, they succeeded the second time around. The biggest reason people will buy this phone is for the PDA like features it offers. The Sendo X comes with a built in address book that allows multiple user details to be stored and accessed under most applications. It also features a calendar / date book. You can change the view from day, week, and month -- depending on your preference. Create to-do lists and prioritize each listing in the built-in task list manager. Synchronize all of your information with most of the popular programs such as Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes. All of these functions eliminate the need for most PDA's and allow you to have everything you need all in one unit.

Messaging:
Included with the Sendo X is a built-in email client that allows the user to view up to six email accounts. It supports the most popular protocols including POP, SMTP and IMAP. It even allows the user to synchronize with their existing email client. Along with email, the Sendo X offers SMS & MMS messaging. Everyone is familiar with SMS messaging... it allows you to send short text messages to virtually any phone, while MMS (multimedia messaging service) is much newer and not supported by all phones. MMS allows sending and receiving of photos, videos, text, applications, and audio. This is especially important since the Sendo X has a built in camera, now you can send those pictures to all your friends. It also has the ability to instant message, just like on your computer. This option however is up to the carrier to install.

Document Viewer:
While the details on this are still sketchy, the Sendo X is supposed to be able to view a wide range of documents, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, and even ZIP files. It opens the document view automatically when opening email attachments or downloading files from the internet. The installation cd also offer support for over 40 more document types. This support only makes the Sendo X a better contender in the fierce Smartphone market.

RealOne / Mp3:
Sendo X MP3 PlayerThe Sendo X has RealOne media player built in which allows for video and audio play back. It supports numerous video formats, including mpeg and realplayer files. It can even stream video or audio content from the internet depending on your carrier's network. Along with RealOne is a stand alone mp3 player that up to a full cd's worth of music with the built in memory. To top that off, you can listen to your music or videos with the included headset or the built in SoniXT dual port loudspeaker. The Sendo X truly qualifies as a mobile sound system. The only thing they left out was a built in radio.

Themes / Customization:
The most important feature to me is the ability to customize my phone's look. While changeable faceplates will most likely not be supported, it does allow for customization of user menu's and graphics. Nearly every aspect of the software's look can be customized, including the wallpaper, colors of menus and even your own personal menu. Even the welcome and goodbye screens are customizable. Probably one of the coolest features of the Sendo X is the Now!T Screen, which allows users to customize their own screen with frequently used applications, web links, and a quick view of appointments.

Java:
Sendo X PinballAs with most phones on the market today, the Sendo X also features support for J2ME MIDP CLDC Java with Bluetooth support. It also comes with pre-installed java games and applications -- Sendo Pinball and Funny Farmer. The Sendo X incorporates the Symbian OS and Nokia's Series 60 software. Therefore all games available today for these platforms will seamlessly play on the phone. Games and applications can also be downloaded from the worldwide web / wap browser. Some of the built in applications include converter, notepad, & calculator.

Image Editor / Album:
To enhance the photos taken or uploaded to the phone, Sendo included a powerful image editor to manipulate images. Images can be cropped and morphed. The user can also add drawings, speech balloons, and fun backgrounds to the photos stored on the phone. The album allows users to view and delete images as well as send images to other users.

Voice Commands:
Sendo decided to add in voice control capabilities to the Sendo X which makes it virtually the first to be able to dial any number in the user's phone book. Unlike most phones which only allow you to voice dial up to ten numbers, the Sendo takes it one step further. It uses speaker independent speech recognition software to recognize commands. It also allows users to navigate menus using voice commands.

Language:
The Sendo X is available with over seven different language packs. They also plan to release more after the phone is released. However support for Chinese is dependent upon release in greater China markets.
